Here at Rookwood School we provide an environment where all pupils can learn and become able users of mathematics. We believe that it is of prime importance to encourage mathematical thinking, enabling them to become enthusiastic lifelong learners. Through a variety of approaches we aim to reveal to students that mathematics is indeed the language of the Universe.
Curriculum at Key Stage 3
We believe that confidence in mathematics must be built on the firm foundations of basic numeracy and algebra skills. At Key Stage 3 these skills are practised and instilled. This is achieved through problem-solving, investigations and practical activities. Pupils are taught in ability groups with fluid and frequent movement between groups when appropriate. The syllabus is led by the National Curriculum with additional and challenging content.
Curriculum at Key Stage 4
Pupils build on their KS3 experience and work towards GCSE at either Foundation or Higher Level. The most able pupils are entered for the Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths which enables a smooth transition to A Level.
Board and spec: GCSE Edexcel Syllabus A and AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths
Exam structure: GCSE: Three terminal papers. Level 2 Certificate: Two terminal papers
Many students will participate in activities to enrich their learning provided by UKMT. Junior and Intermediate challenges are undertaken, with the most successful candidates progressing to further competitions. In recent years a team has travelled to Oxford University to participate in the regional finals. Study support sessions are offered at all levels with both Staff and peer led activities.
